My Grade 4 class read Sparrow Girl and we enjoyed your book immensely. I had never heard of the Sparrow War before discovering your book. We wondered how you heard about this event in history and what inspired you to write the book. Was the Sparrow Girl real? Did a little girl really help to save the sparrow population? Did the sparrows ever come back? I did some additional reading on the events in China in 1958, but we would appreciate any additional information you could provide from an author's perspective. Thanks! Mme Woods' Grade 4 class |

Ah, it's the end of the school year and I can introduce Stuart to my first graders, again. I started off my lesson by saying "Sometimes you find a book that you love to read year after year and you don't care how many times you read it because it's so much fun." I think they agree with me. Thanks for giving us such a fabulous character and story to enjoy! |

Good afternoon Ms. Pennypacker,
I am a reading teacher at a small charter school on Long Island. My group of 4 second graders are reading your book, Stuart Goes to School. These are their thoughts on your book.
Ashley--Thank you for writing this book. It is awesome to read. I love the way you added the funny details to the story. Your book is helping me become a better reader. I really enjoy reading now because the story is so funny. I am going to read all of your other books now.
Marelyn- I really like this book because of all the funny things Stuart does. It makes me laugh. I will tell my sister about this book so she could read it too. I am now becoming a more fluent reader by practicing reading this book.
Happy Mother's Day,
Love, Mrs. Rufino, Marelyn and Ashley

I love to read, especially funny books. (I really like the part when Stanley goes down the drain to get his mother's ring and the policeman pulls him out) Can you tell if a book will be funny as you are writing it? How do you write funny books? |
