Dear Sara Pennypacker,
I love the book Clementine. It's funny that Mrs. Rice has a food name like Clementine, but she just shouted that out.
(Laura is six, and this is the first chapter book she has read to her parents) |

Hi. I bought your book Pax for us to read as a family. My youngest, Dino, 10yo, took one look at the book, its title, and the cover illustration, and said "No. I can't read it. It looks too sad." I waited and pulled it out tonight as he was snuggled in bed. He said no. I cracked it open and showed him the first illustration and read "Just because it isn't happening here doesn't mean it isn't happening." He squeezed me and started crying. He said "I told you it's sad." I tried the 1st sentence. No luck. More tears flowed. WOW! I had to stop. I asked if I could read it by myself and share it with him later. He asked for a tissue. Bravo Ms. Sara. You touched a reader with the illustrations and the first few words. I can't wait to read it all tonight!

Hello Sara!
My 4th grade class read Pax this year and we absolutely fell in love with your book. Since my student's didn't want this to be over, my class decided to create another chapter. This is from Cole and I thought his writing truly captured how you wrote the story. Enjoy!
Chapter 35
Pax looked out the bush at Peter leaving. He jumped out of the bush one last time, but Peter was now too far away to see him. He went back into the woods with Bristle and Runt. He heard rustling in some nearby brush assuming it was a tasty mouse. Only it wasn’t a mouse.
The coyote looked at Pax with a sly look on his face. Then it pounced on Pax sending him flying to the ground. Bristle jumped on the coyote's back and motioned him to run away. Although he never did. He helped Runt squeeze into a fallen log. Then he grabbed the sharpest stick he could find and charged at the coyote. The coyote shoved Bristle off his back and ran toward Pax. He cornered the frightened fox right near a steep cliff over a rushing creek. Then Pax heard something coming for him and it was coming fast.
Peter threw the stick he was holding. It hit the coyote in the back. He then charged at Peter, releasing Pax. Peter scared the coyote away, but there was a squealing sound sound coming from Runt’s log. Pax and Peter looked to see a big coyote terrorizing Runt. When they got there, they saw Bristle with teeth marks in her leg. She had tried to protect Runt, but was now slowly backing away from the coyote. Then, the coyote came out with Runt in his mouth.
Pax lunged at the attacker, letting Runt run free. Bristle ran toward her brother, comforting him. Pax taunted the coyote, then ran toward the cliff. Then he did a dangerous act. He jumped in the creek. And sure enough, the coyote followed. The coyote hit a rock and went motionless. Pax landed in the water and smelled what he smelled when Runt stepped on the mine. Then the earth lifted with a loud BOOM. Pax had risked his life to save Runt. But then, as the smoke cleared, they saw a bleeding, shivering Pax. Peter rushed over and hugged his pet. Pax saw tears in his boys eyes.
With Pax and Runt in his arms, Bristle trailing behind, Peter went to the camp to take Pax home, along with his new friends.

Thank you for Pax. I is brilliant and touching and dyableman good and I've read it 3 times since I got it out of the library on the 13th. I'm 61 years old but that probably doesn't matter. There was no child listening to me read. Except the young girl inside me. Thank you. |

Simple a remarkable achievement on all levels. Thank you for bringing Pax and Peter to the world of children's lit. |

Dear Sara,
I am in third grade. I am reading Clementine and the Spring Trip. My favorite part was when there was a new girl named Olive because on the playground all the kids were asking Olive so many questions. I liked that part because one of the kids asked Olive if she had ever been to jail which was a funny question to ask someone. |
